For decades, short-game coaches have taught that for optimal distance control on wedge shots you should launch at or below 30 degrees — and they’re correct. To achieve a 30° launch with a high-lofted wedge you need 10–15° of forward shaft lean at impact. When you lean the shaft that much, the leading edge lowers dramatically and gets very close to the ground, leaving almost no margin for error. Elite players may get away with that margin; for everyone else, the short game turns into chunk shots and frustration.
Why we built the W3

What the W3 is
Introducing the W3. We designed it with a steeper sole angle optimal for 10–15° of shaft lean at impact — you can lean the shaft more without the leading edge getting stuck. We also gave it a wider sole, so you can increase your angle of attack and hit down on the ball without taking a huge divot; the wider sole creates cleaner contact and improved spin control. The W3 also features Avoda’s Split Sole geometry — reducing the drag that usually slows the club through impact, balancing ground resistance to reduce chunks with maintained clubhead speed for distance control.
